Julius Blum, a farrier and carriage smith by trade, founds his company on 1 March 1952. His first product is a horseshoe stud which prevents horses from slipping.
A large hall (now Plant 1) is constructed in the Austrian municipality of Höchst. It provides 660 sq metres of floorspace and accommodates eight automatic lathes.
The first furniture fitting
Blum produces the ANUBA hinge for doors, windows and furniture.
The first apprentice
The first Blum apprentice starts his training as a metalworker (Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship today).
The first concealed hinge goes into production.
The first products are exported to European locations, primarily South Tyrol, Switzerland and Germany.
Roller runners are added to the production range.
First sales agencies abroad
After establishing its first sales agencies abroad in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Denmark, Blum expands its presence to Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Belgium and France.
First trade fairs
Blum participates in interzum in Cologne for the first time.
Blum introduces a systematic apprentice training programme and opens its own training centre in Austria.
New plant in Höchst
Plant 2 – our current HQ – is built and put into operation in Höchst.

Elfriede, the first female apprentice, embarks on her technical apprenticeship.

For the first time ever, a Blum apprentice becomes world champion at the WorldSkills Competition.
ISO 9001 certification
Blum is the first manufacturer of furniture fittings to be certified to the ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard.
An additional production facility is set up in Poland.
Blum presents the new TANDEMBOX box system made of steel, aluminium and stainless steel and introduces the INSERTA assembly method for hinges.
Blum USA introduces dual vocational training based on the Austrian model.
Blum is certified as a "Vocational training centre of excellence" for the first time.

Plant in China
With its fully automated high bay warehouse, Blum’s plant in Shanghai is opened after three years of construction and starts producing hinges for the local market.
