Circular economy and utilising resources

Protecting nature's precious resources

The circular economy is key to overcoming the scarcity of resources and reducing environmental pollution. We therefore use resources as efficiently as possible and minimise our waste wherever we can – in keeping with the principles of the European Green Deal.

By manufacturing our products in the most sustainable way possible, we not only protect the environment, but also enjoy long-term economic opportunities.

The circular economy at Blum

Raw materials are precious and we keep them circulating as long and as comprehensively as possible. In other words, "Reuse it, don't lose it"! But how do we do this? By using resources efficiently and constantly consolidating material cycles.

Steel

  • By increasing the current recycling rate of 24% across the entire raw material group
  • By significantly reducing production waste
  • By implementing a recycling logistics system for steel scrap that is pre-sorted, collected by our recycling partners, recycled and reintroduced into the production cycle
  • By switching to lead-free alloys

Zinc

  • By returning the sprues to the machine
  • By casting new starting material in our in-house remelting furnace
  • By processing materials that we cannot recycle ourselves, but which our recycling partners reprocess into high-quality zinc – and which we then reuse

Plastic

  • By using process-related waste as secondary raw materials (in-house recycling)
  • By reprocessing the sprues of highly stressed components, which are reused as "regenerated material" in production
  • By increasing the use of lower-emission plastics

Waste and recycling

Minimising waste and ensuring that it can be reused and recycled play a key role in product development, production and disposal. Using less primary raw material as a result, we can avoid unnecessary transport movements and close material cycles.

Prudent and strategic waste management is critical for us, whereby we focus on the following areas:

  • Automating and digitalising waste management
  • Reducing residual waste volumes
  • Increasing the level of recycling and expanding the scope of recycled materials
  • Reducing transport movements
  • Raising awareness among employees

Over 90% of all our waste is recycled.

Packaging

Even the best products are of no use if they are damaged before they even reach the customer. That's why we've been developing high-quality packaging solutions for decades – with the aim of finding the perfect balance between conserving resources, protecting products and maintaining efficient processes.

For us, good packaging means:

  • Unbeatable product protection and safety during transport
  • Easy storage
  • Efficient processing for the customer

Our reusable transport packaging meets all of these criteria. And better yet, it's sustainable too.
