Apprenticeship program holds graduation for new employees

Nine students finished a four-year apprenticeship program earning their Journeyman's Certificate and Associates Degree in Mechatronics August 14, thanks to a unique partnership with Apprenticeship 2000 and Central Piedmont Coummunity College.

Celebrated with dinner and a graduation ceremony, this milestone marks the completion of more than 8,000 hours of on-the-job training. More than 160 graduates have been through the Apprenticeship 2000 program.

The graduates not only have guaranteed full-time jobs from their sponsor companies, but also four years seniority, and zero college debt. The average salary for the graduates begins at approximately $36,400.

Apprenticeship 2000 has been a proven model that is being duplicated all across the state, according to the NC Apprenticeship Director, Kathrun Castelloes. "They're truly a success and a role model for our state," she said.

In addition to the graduates, the ceremony also recognized the 11 students who signed up to begin the program this fall.

The emcee for the evening, Beau Pray, is in his second year of the program. "I've learned so much more than I thought I would," Pray said. "It's unbelievable the things I'm able to do. I'm doing things past my comprehension when I first started."

The Apprenticeship 2000 program was developed to close the skills gap in today's manufacturing facilities. This four-year technical training program is comprised of six Charlotte-area companies that are committed to working with highly motivated juniors and seniors from local high schools.
